The country has a Parliamentary democracy with equal representation of Muslims and Christians and the Constitution guarantees basic freedoms and human rights. Traditionally, President is a Maronite whereas Prime Minister is a Sunni and the Speaker a Shiite.
Trade & Economic Relations
Lebanese Market Size
The size of Lebanese market is estimated to be only four million. Compared to the annual global imports into Lebanon, Indian share is merely 1.1 percent. Bulk of the Lebanese import is from Western hemisphere and to a lesser extent from the Gulf region. The main reason behind this practice is the long established trading links with those countries which could be due to the presence of a large Lebanese Diasporas settled there for quite some time.
Recent Trend
Although, the local currency has remained unchanged against dollar, Lebanese imports from Europe have become costly due to the appreciation of Euro against dollar. This has made the local business community to look towards China and India for their requirements. The visit of Lebanese businessmen to India is on the increase in the recent past to explore trading possibilities.
Volume of Trade
Indo-Lebanon trade, which has come to a virtual halt during the civil war, has started picking up gradually. Total trade between Lebanon and India was to the tune of US$ 13.60 million in 1993. During the seven year period from 1993 to 1999, the trade grew at a slow pace and could reach only around the mark of US$ 55 million in 1999. However, since 2000 there has been a marked difference. Total volume of trade during 2003 was US$ 98.24 million as compared to US$ 85.3 million in 2002, an annual increase of 15.16 percent. Balance of trade is heavily in favor of India which has reached US$ 106 million in 2006. Details of bilateral trade may be seen at Annexure 'A'.
Imports from India
Indian exports to Lebanon amounted to US$ 118 million in 2006 compared to US$ 139 million in 2005. Over half of the total import is made up of textiles & its articles and Gems & Jewellery. Other major items are animal products, articles of plastic, vegetable products, Machinery/electrical instruments and articles of base metal. Textiles and its articles accounted for about 25 percent of the total imports from India in 2006 whereas Gems & Jewellery accounted for 29 percent. Details of imports of Principal commodities into Lebanon from India during last three calendar years may please be seen at Annexure 'B'.
Meat and meat products, especially frozen buffalo meat, has a good market as it is cheaper in comparison to fresh meat. However, importers in this commodity are facing a stiff challenge from the syndicate of live stock importers. On our intervention, the local authorities have standardized the procedure for import of frozen meat from India and short listed certain Indian companies for imports. APEDA has been kept informed of these developments.
Exports to India
Lebanese exports to India amounted to US$ 12 million in 2006 as compared to US$ 20 million in 2005, registering a marginal decrease. The Lebanese exports have remained around US$ 14 million since 1999. Indian imports from Lebanon mainly constituted products of chemicals/allied industry (55%) and base metal and its articles (22 %). Details of exports of principal commodities to India from Lebanon during last three calendar years may please be seen at Annexure 'B'.
